La Cena del Capocanale

La Cena del Capocanale is Borgo Egnazia's signature summer dining experience, and one that captures the spirit of Puglia so beautifully. Think long communal tables sat beneath twinkling string lights and ancient olive trees, classic Apulian dishes slow-cooked to perfection in a pot, and the sound of traditional pizzica dancing filling the air. It's an evening rooted in local tradition, bringing together food, music, and the simply joy of gathering at the table.
Last summer, we visited Borgo Egnazia for the first time to celebrate our anniversary, and it was nothing short of magical. This time around, we found ourselves back in Puglia during the first week of September, when summer begins to gently wind down, yet its essence remains very much alive. There's something about summers in southern Italy that I'll never tire of, and I still have to pinch myself sometimes that this is our life.
This dining experience felt quite different from our dinner at La Frasca, with a much more convivial atmosphere. We were seated at a communal table alongside hotel guests and tourists from abroad. This created a lively, almost festive ambiance. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if my husband was the only Pugliese diner there that evening. The entire experience reminded me somewhat of a traditional Hawaiian luau, where local culture and customs are showcased for visitors to enjoy.
We were served a three-course meal, with everything prepared right within view. There was the casaro making fresh giuncata on the spot, while a local homecook, or massaia, prepared strascinate by hand beside him. Nearby, a chef tended to a traditional clay pot of il cutturrid, a classic slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables. And, of course, our server was on hand to explain each course and make sure our wine glasses were never empty.
Overall, it was such a memorable experience that we were so happy to partake in. It may not have been your typical romantic Borgo Egnazia dinner, but there was something special about getting to experience my husband's southern Italian heritage that made me feel even closer to him.
Grazie a tutti for the lovely evening!
