Travel Diaries - Madrid

Churros con chocolate, 99c cheesecake, and tintos de verano all make Madrid one of my new favorite European cities. Not only because of the food and the architecture, but also because the city felt so cosmopolitan and is one of the places I could genuinely imagine us living in. We combined my husband's work trip with our friend's 30th birthday weekend and sought to make the most of 72 hours in the Spanish capital.

We left on the first flight out of London on a Wednesday morning and arrived at the Madrid airport around noon. Grabbing a jamón y queso bocadillo each before making our way to the hotel, we were fully equipped to face the chaos of a lunchtime protest that caused the street to our hotel to close, meaning that we had a 13-minute walk with our luggage up the Gran Via. It wasn't the welcome we imagined, but it still marked the beginning of our Madrid adventure.

In the days that followed, I had the chance to work remotely from the hotel while Mario was at the office, giving me a glimpse of the digital nomad lifestyle I had always envisioned. Enjoying coffee and pastries with my love before starting work, picking up takeout during my lunch break, and working from the hotel lobby before moving to the next hotel for the weekend, I found myself truly living my manifestation.

In the evenings, Mario and I checked out various tapas restaurants, rooftops and markets. We enjoyed adopting the Spanish custom of dining late before retiring to our room at night. Before we knew it, the weekend arrived and we were meeting up with Mario's childhood friends to celebrate one of their own's 30th birthday. There's something so chic about bringing the plans out of the group chat and getting to experience a different city together. We are truly lucky to even have the opportunity.

We had so much fun and can't wait to visit Madrid again!
