Portugal has always been a top European destination for us, so we wanted to make sure to cross it off the list this year. Then, when it came time to deciding between Lisbon and Porto, it was an easy choice as Mario has a friend we could see there as well. To be honest though, we were just eager for a city break where we could finally embrace the summer vibe. Plus, having seafood by the river under the sunshine sounded right up our alley.

We stayed in the Massarelos district of Porto, which was about a 30-minute walk to the city center. We found the location very convenient, with a tram stop right outside the hotel. However, we opted to walk most of the time. We always prefer walking whenever possible, as we both believe it's the best way to discover a city. Even in hot, sunny weather, which Porto graciously provided to us. Thank goodness for linen!

Mario and I had such a great time in Porto. Visiting cities and towns where at least one of us has been before is always special because we can show each other the places we've seen. However, discovering a new destination together is an entirely different experience, and it's something I will always be grateful for. We enjoyed strolling along the riverside, wandering through alleyways, visiting local shops + markets, and our most favorite pasttime, trying all the local delicacies. I finally tasted my first pastel de nata, and its safe to say that I'm a fan.

I've dreamed of visiting Porto since my teenage years, making this weekend trip a long-awaited and special experience for me. We definitely will be back!

Highlights of our Porto trip:

  • Pastel de nata!! I've had many chances to try this Portuguese pastry, but I waited until this very moment to partake it in its country of origin. Needless to say, I could easily eat three in one sitting if it were socially acceptable. Take my advice and sprinkle the cinnamon on top. SO delicious!

  • Our afternoon at Bolhão Market - bopping around all the food and drink stands. We went for a bit of everything: beef carpaccio, sardines, octopus, scallops, rosé. I even got a fruit smoothie at the end because I couldn't resist the colorful fruit stands.

  • Admiring the iconic tiles and architecture around the city - the São Bento train station was particularly impressive. I could imagine arriving in the city by train and immediately wanting to stay once seeing the lobby.

  • Watching the sunset at - and also walking over - Douro Bridge, Porto's famous double-deck metal arch bridge.

  • Trying Filipinos ice cream sandwich, which caught my attention at the convenience store. Obviously, I had some immediate initial thoughts, but had to at least try it for myself. Regardless of its naming origin, my husband and I still had a laugh enjoying a treat by the river.

  • Riding the elétrico trams - we took Line 1 from our hotel one morning and enjoyed the riverside views into the center. It's a fun experience to have at least once if you're visiting Porto!

  • The Squid Ink Risotto at Terra Nova Restaurante - you can't go wrong with a dish that looks like that. Be warned though, your teeth and lips will be stained purple for a bit after eating.
