My husband and I have been eager to try Kasa & Kin for the longest time. I have missed good Filipino food and while I am improving my skills for the cuisine, nothing beats eating delicious meal out every once in a while. So, heading into a bank holiday weekend, we made our way to SoHo to check out this bakery by day, restaurant by evening. And it did not disappoint.
We made reservations for a Saturday evening, and the spot was packed. The dining area itself is so colorful and what I imagine the Philippines to be like. I have yet to visit the motherland, and I am so excited for the chance. We were seated straight away and greeted by the friendliest waiter named Ian - who was on the same page as us the whole evening when it came to ordering from the menu.
One of my favorite Filipino foods is grilled meat - fish & seafood included. I appreciate this style of cooking and it reminds me so much of warm weather + good times. So, when we saw that Kasa & Kin did skewers, we had to try them all. Between the two of us, we ordered a full spread that made us and our tummies very happy.
OUR RATINGS
Mixed Grill Skewers (one of each) - 9.5/10
These were incredible and satisfied all of my grilled meat cravings. And the Kasa Grill house sauce (lemongrass and ginger flavored mayo with anannatto oil infusion) that it was served with was delectable. However, for the price, we expected to the skewers to have more to them. It was quite expensive for the quantity, but quality was top.
Rice Paper Spring Rolls - 6/10
These are called lumpia on the menu, but I know lumpia to be deep fried and filled with meat + veg. This was a spring roll, which was refreshing and probably the healthiest thing we ordered, but lumpia is one of those universally-loved Filipino food items (it's my Italian husband's favorite) and I was expecting more here.
Pork Belly Sisig - 10/10
Now this one I was really looking forward to trying as sisig is a guilty pleasure dish for me. It was served sizzling and with that same Kasa Grill house sauce that I'm still dreaming about to be honest. We couldn't finish this one, but we were thankfully able to take home the leftovers.
Garlic Fried Rice - 10/10
A Filipino staple!! We ordered as one of our sides because what is any type of Asian food without rice? Incomplete is what it is.
Pancit Guisado - 10/10
Another one of those universally-loved Filipino foods, and very hard to get wrong. The serving size for a side is perfect for 2-3 people, but of course we completely smashed that.
Crispy Pata - 11/10
The serving size of this was insane and we had leftovers of this as well. We wanted to try everything our hearts desired this visit, but we'll probably just order this one as our meal next time.
Ube Brownie Sundae - 15/10 (rated by my husband)
A brownie topped with soft-serve ice cream - it doesn't get better than that.
Suman - 10/10
This was our waiter's recommendation and it did not disappoint. I believe the highest compliment you can give a dessert is the "not too sweet" comment, and this hit the spot. It was served with coconut caramel and chocolate sauces. Let's just say that we absolutely needed the half an hour walk back home.
We will definitely be back for round 2! What is your favorite Filipino food?
